Problem when simply changing crossover cable

Basically i decided to change a old crossover cable that was connecting the router to the modem for a new one due to disconnection problems, when i did this it had a bit of trouble connecting, it worked a little and then stopped working.
My network got a new name, for example lets say it was wifinetwork it ended up being wifinetwork2, my ip address completely changed to a different type of ip address that i have never seen before, not the usual 192.168.etc
Does this mean i need to reconfigure the wireless settings? do i need to reset the router? i honestly didnt think the cable would change anything.

No the cable shouldnt change anything. Ive swapped cables over before with no problems. Could try resetting the router.0

Has the IP address changed to 169.** ?
Are you sure it needs a crossover cable?, and if so have you definitely used a crossover cable?
Do lights come onto the router to show its connected?, if the cable is wrong they won't light up.

OK checking simple things first :
Are you sure the cable is a "Crossover" not a "Patch" cable? (modern network cards can automatically detect the cable type and work accordingly.)
Are you sure the cable is not damaged? (do the 2 lights on the PC network port flicker / stay on? )
One should be for indicating the speed the other will flash when data is being sent/received)
What IP address are you getting?
If the card can't find a Router to get an address from it will fall back to a default IP address.Laters

Assuming it is a patch cable, are both ends pushed right in until they click? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

The wifinetwork and wifinetwork2 are pure descriptions for windows purposes, you have "two" networks both with the same mac address , I get the same when I plug in an ethernet cable to my lappy when I have it on wireless mode at the same time
If the router is newish it won't make a difference if you use crossover nor not it sorts that out itself.
