Hi everyone,
Just after some advice on working from home. My emplyer has closed the local office and I am going to be working from home. They are paying for the phoneline and broadband. Their view on the extra energy useage is 'what you save on petrol from commuting will be the same as the extra spent on heating and electric'. Trouble for me is that I live in the same town as I work so I have no commuting costs.
Does anyone know a rough figure on what I can expect the extra cost of elec and heating to be? I am going to approach my employer with expected extra costs in the hope that they will give me a monthly lump sum to cover the cost.
further info...
The office will be in a small spare bedrooom
I use a laptop with an aditional monitor
I will have a printer running but do minimum printing.
Heating is gas boiler radiators (new - very efficient)
Thanks in advance for any help

But they've closed that office, so you will be incurring huge commuting costs if you have to travel to the nearest office now

I also work from home, it's my business which is an internet business so i work from cafe's, pubs, hotels anywhere really providing i have 3G.
So here are my costs:
Apple Laptop measured 14w consumption, 8 hours = 1.6p p/d
LED Monitor 11w, 8 hours = 1.26p p/d
Harmon Kardon Soundsticks 30w, 8 hours = 3.43p
Lighting 3pm - 6pm 11w = 0.47p
Gas heating - this is harder to calculate, i can't give you an exact figure. I can give you a range which would be £1 - £2 per day depending on the size and heat required for your house.
I know it is a rough calculation but i think it costs me about 70p for every time my boiler kicks in to heat the house. It could be running for 30min - 50mins and comes on about 5 times a day, costing me about £3.50 in gas a day but some of that is the hob.
Alternatively, turn off your heating as you normally would going out to work and get an oil filled radiator which rated between 0.8kw and 1.5kw running for 6 of the 8 hours would cost £1.29 p/d. But i honestly dont think it would be on that long. That's worse case, more like half that. The oil continues to radiate heat and it will only heat the small space around you.
Then factor in extra water usage for drinks, kettle, toilet flushes, couldn't tell you how much this would be.
It's a few £'s per month for your equipment, mine is low consumption, some computers consume much more. Then around an extra £20 on heating.
//keep in mind that this all depends on your usage and what rate you pay for on your electricity and gas. It will differ from mine. On the electric calculation i used the average electricity rate but for the gas i took the info from my usage and costs.0 -
Lol - you'd probably spent more in shoe leather than you'll spend running your laptop.
Btw, unless you have a new dedicated phoneline & bb installed, then expect HMRC to tax you as a BiK if your employer now pays for them.
