Re vamping 15 year old pine sideboard/painting it/ADVICE PLEASE!!

Options
I have read the threads where people have asked for advice in painting re-vamping kitchen cupboard doors; but as my side board is "horrible" solid pine I thought there may be different advice for me to follow.

Bought it 15 years ago, and turned that horrid orange colour it goes after being exposed to the sun. It is solid but soooo dated.

In the good old days I would have just thrown it and got something new and modern ....on credit...not now!!

I have bought a white wood primer; and DULUX one coat satin wood (which said in brochure I needed this for painting furniture so took thier advice.)

However.....I tried a bit last night just to see the true colour and 24 hours later it is still tacky! Is this because the primer hadnt been put under this "test" bit??

Or have I gone horribly wrong.

Tomorrrow I plan to unscrew the doors sand the unit with my Black and Decker Mouse sander just to rough it up a bit. Give it a really good brush to get it all off and then prime it, then when that is dry work in the DULUX Satinwoood "one coat."

Then I have bought cheap pewter knobs to put on.

Does this sound about right I are my plans horribly wrong and why is the paint still tacky after nearly a day?

Sorry for the long post but I am so determined to get this right as DH thinks I am crazy and will mess up and I want to prove him wrong.

Thank you in advance all you DIYers!!

I painted a piece of furniture last year i tried loads of sample paints untill I got the right colour I wanted, I think in the end I mixed a couple up.

About the tacky paint was the surface a bit greasy?

Take your time with it and prep. it properly and then it should look ok.
    Good luck.:T

What kind of furniture/decor have you got elsewhere in the room? With my oldfashioned taste (or rather taste for the oldfashioned) I would have got rid of the primer with your sander, thereby removing any old varnish/stain, and re-staining it - with wood stain - and then hand-sanding the edges, maybe even antiquing it a bit.

This can be done easily after the stain has dried (dries relatively quickly) by applying a layer of darker stain, or even emulsion paint, especially in the nooks and crannies. Then simply wipe it off, leaving the darker colour in the corners, cracks, ridges etc. Hard to explain, but i'm sure the wise world of google searching will have some info pics or even vids.
  • Hi , i recently painted a v large old welsh dresser, and it went fine, but just make sure you rub it down really well, also my husband who's better at diy than me advises to rub down very lightly with very fine sand paper between coats as this will help each coat take.

Try a door first, !!! long as you prep well it should go ok, if it looks funny just stripp it off and start again.

Have you considered bleaching the wood to a lighter colour?

I have tried stripping off the glaze/gloss completely, but it took forever, especially all the nobbly bits i had to sand round. I did one table and it looks real good and I waxed it a couple of times so the grain cme up.

I then started on the table and chairs....well they were so intricate to take off all the gloss I did one chair and top of the table as it was flat therefore relatively easy. Its been like that for 2 years now as I cant face doing iy any more...and just want to get rid of all that 80,s tan pine; hence the idea of painting.

    PLAN
    1. I have emptied sideboard and dresser and moved it into garden, Im hoping it doesnt rain but forecast says it will get out nice but is a bit damp and misty now.

    2.Go and lightly sand.

3.Prime well and leave a day, cover it outside as it says it wont rain.

    4. Paint it early tomorrow morning.

    5.Knobs on.

I will be proud even if it doesnt look too goood as OH does NO DIY and hasnt in 16 years of marriage and i always had this in built thing that it wasnt for me to do just had to put up with it....Im now enjoying it and feel liberated!!!:D
