Umm, I'm slightly more worried you have a "rep" selling you direct line - they don't do reps or agents.

The £1M is what is know as blanket cover.

This means it covers your re-build figure plus in addition any site clearance fees, architect fees ect.

If this is the only amount direct line offer they would not be able to lower it.

The £1m blanket cover will cover the rebuild costs of the home but it does not mean that the bugalow is insured for £1m (unless it would cost that to rebuild!).

Many insurers use this type of thing on buildings cover however the price that you pay is calculated on your own personal details and the property details. So someone living in a 1 bedroom bungalow in a low risk postcode area will pay substantially less than someone in a 6 bedroom house.

If you can find someone offering an attractive premium it does not matter if you are over insured (better than under!)

I am with Direct Line. My bungalow is insured for up to £1m. It wouldn't cost anything like that to rebuild, but I am not concerned about that. Each year they quote me and each year I find the policy cheaper, so they quote me a lower figure and I accept. The one year that I had to make a claim, they were on the ball and had the work done quickly and to a high standard.

And at least I know I will never get into an argument about whether my house is under-insured, as a friend did when an out of control lorry smashed into the front of her house and ended up part-way into her living room
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.
