When is a 6' fence not a 6' fence?

  • I've just heard back from the developer, they're a small company so incredibly quick and efficient when dealing with queries. What they've said is that the existing fence is being removed and they're going to build up the height using sleepers and then erect the fence on top.

Is it usual to use sleepers for soil retention?

Whatever they use needs foundations to act as retaining wall, will sleepers have this?

I'd be happy building a raised bed with railway sleepers. I wouldn't want my whole garden to be supported by a few lumps of wood without proper foundations.

My parents used sleepers as a retaining wall in part of their garden (which is terraced into multiple levels as it is very steep), and they're still there 20 years later. Of course, they were done with a proper foundation.
  • I suspect the 'proper foundation' part is going to be the stumbling block...
