own up- who sabotaged my scales?

I keep 2 sets of digital scales on my desk (I always have a back up for emergencies) , both were working yesterday.
This morning neither work. I have changed both sets of batteries- and nothing, dead as a dodo. One is an Argos set and one is a much newer Asda set and bought at very different times.
I have a third back up set brand new, so I have taken the batteries from one of the old set and put them in the new one and that works. So overnight two sets of scales decided to die on me- how weird is that?

It's ebay's new policy - let your DSRs dip too much and they blow up your stuff with their evil death ray.

You don't by any chance own a heavy cat who might have decided to have a nap on them, do you?0 -
If you have a small nail file, give this a gentle rub against the battery contacts of the 2 non working items.
You may find that a small bit of corrosion has built up on them over the years and by changing the batteries, some of the corrosion has moved and is stopping a good electrical contact from being made.0 -
Dreamailttle, yes I do have a cat......hmm.....
Shaun, my OH tried 'doing things' with the connections but nothing worked. I can't believe both broke overnight it is just too weird.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I do have a Victorian set of weight in my hall at the moment (I fall over them every time I rush to the front door). Unfortunately they are not 'quite' accurate enough to tell me if my parcel is just in or just over the 750g weight band....
The weights though are jolly heavy and are gathering dust as I am sure they must be worth something and can't find anyone that wants them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
