Buyer Can't Open Front Door

Oh dear, we have completed on our house sale this morning and the new owner can't open the door ... I have been phoned 3 times in half an hour by a frantic estate agent trying to find out if there is a 'trick' to opening the door?

I mean - it's a door: insert key, turn key, press down handle ... how hard can it be?

I am totally confused

Is it a leasehold flat you've sold?

It is *possible* that the freeholder (esp if it's a HA) has changed the locks - mine did the day before because some other new people had just moved in to the flat below. The EA ran around trying to get new keys for me the day previous!

Alternatively, has the EA given the buyers the correct keys? With so many keys, they could have given the wrong ones.

as above - the keys may also have been cut at some point and the EA gave the copies, some just don't work......

Wouldnt worry about it though down to them now?

They claim they gave the buyer the keys that we dropped off but I do wonder if they managed to get them mixed up - of course they are denying this is possible. I have not heard anything in the last half an hour so I presume they must have sorted it out.

Not a good start for them in their new home :)

Not nice for them but it is their house and their problem.

This happened to me with my last 2 properties. On this one, I had to go in through the back door. My kids went straight in through the front of course. It`s probably as suggested, the original keys have been copied - and copies made of the copies etc. I suppose you should change the locks, but I`ve never bothered.

Apparently WE gave them the wrong keys - oh yes, I have so many spare sets of random house keys on my key ring???

The estate agents had not actually given the buyers their copy so they have now driven down the the house and given them that set (can't believe they thought it was ok to hold the spare keys after thesale completed!).

So they are in the house and I can stop worrying.
