quick royal mail recorded question

i sent something 2nd class recorded on Wed. the buyer mailed me yest to say they haven't got it yet. im not too bothered as i know it can take 7 working days. however i checked tracking and its still with rm.but, when i checked the address details on my receipt the postcode is wrong. im 99% sure this is a clerk error. however it says address not verified. will the postcode be on file as correct address or is this merely for my receipt. basically will buyer get it?

The postcode error will slow it down
    however it should get there
how big a difference is it?
Eg. If it is meant to be EH22 4gp,The 1st part routes it to the correct office, the last part if for the street/block of addresses
So the 1st part wrong, causes delays and problems
2nd part, only if theres a query with the rest of the address

The added difficulty though is that if the receipt shows the wrong address you lose your paypal seller protection as you must send to the address paypal gave you.

If this all ends up in a dispute (and it is very early days yet so don't worry) then buyer can appeal any tracking details and insist paypal see your slip showing where item was sent. It also means RM will not compensate you, I lost a recorded claim once as the post code used by a major UK library was not correct according to RM, and they refused my compensation.

Lastly standard mail is not considered lost until 15 working days after postage, the 7 days doesn't come into it at all.

  • I wouldn't worry too much yet. So long as the postcode is correct on the parcel it should get there. If it doesn't then you will have the problems as stated by Soolin above.
I've started checking postcodes on my receipts after the PO typed in the wrong postcode. Is a bit of an inconvience....but better to make sure details are correct

    what are the 1st letters?
EG In Edinburgh we are EH,EN is Enfield,E is is in London
so a poorly written EH/EN or just an E, can lead to mail getting shunted a long way off route.

In this case I would think the parcel will be returned to you, as it has the sender's address on it.

I only say that because a similar thing happened when I was expecting a package and the sender had made a small, one-digit error on my postcode (the one wrong digit made it into a postcode that doesn't exist) and the package never arrived :(

You'd think that the rest of the address being perfect and correct would override the iffy postcode but it doesn't always.

I got the impression that the street address and town are there but the postcode is muddled up. I would expect that to be delayed but delivered eventually. If the whole address is wrong it should come back to the sender provided they put a return address on it.
  • Thanks guys its was n3 but on receipt it says nb3 anyway.it got there safe and sound yesterday. Thanks to all for help and replies

  • Just to confirm - the post code on post office receipts is only used for the purposes of proof of posting. It isn't used to deliver the item. The only product at the PO that links a barcode to an address is parcelforce - and for these the address is verified (so the barcode can be scanned to give the delivery address)
