Reclaiming double-paid home insurance

A few years ago we switched our home insurance policy to a landlord's insurance policy as we has moved out of the house in question and were letting it out. I began paying that policy on a monthly basis but was unaware that the insurer (it was the same one for both policies) has kept taking the premiums for the old policy from my wife's bank account. We explicitly asked to replace one policy with the other and, of course, would never have wanted to double-insure the building and contents, not least because my understanding is that we couldn't have claimed on both anyway. The way I see it, the insurer should have cancelled the old policy immediately. Furthermore, they kept renewing the policy for a further two years, and then stopped it earlier this year. All of this was done with no correspondence to us. I want to reclaim the 2.5 years worth of premiums that they shouldn't have been taking from my wife and would be grateful for any advice on how best to go about this.

Have you asked them for a refund?0

They send you out renewal schedules for 2 years and you did not notice?
As both policies are with the same company it should be easy to resolve but I would expect them to deduct an administration fee.0 -
An insurer will not cancel an existing policy unless instructed to do so.
Write, explaining what has happened and request the premiums for the cover you should have cancelled be refunded.I am a mortgage broker.
