    IF the property is in England & Wales and registered then worth confirming the details held on the land register as suggested by others. This can be done online for a fee of £3 and would confirm the details of your late father's ownership i.e. him alone or him and half-brother or other - take a look at our online FAQ as to how to do this.

    You may also like to take a look at our FAQs re what to do when a property owner dies - guidance on what to do in specific circumstances is provided.

    However dealing with the land registration aspects can often be the most straightforward. Dealing with the beneficial title can be more complex, as you already appreciate, and legal advice should always be sought if uncertainties exist.
