How long do I wait for claim company to contact me?

My car was recently written off in an accident and the engineer assesed and valued it at £700.00. I felt this was too low and they upped it to £800.00. As I said I still felt this was under value the engineer said that it would be passed to the claims department and someone from there would be in touch.

That was over a week ago and I havent heard anything since. However, I did have a hire car via my insurance policy which only went back tuesday and a friend said that the claims dept would be waiting for hire car agreement to end before coming back to me with a figure.

I dont know if thats correct or not though. Does anyone know how long I should wait before I chase it up or do they keep you waiting in the hope you will get desparate and take a low value?

The engineer was from a firm called Hooppers via my own insurance company.

If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it as I dont know wether this timescale is normal or if they have forgotten or are just making me wait.

Thanks

Are your insurer or the 3rd party's insurer paying out?

Nothing in insurance circles moves quickly if its costing them nothing. I would have hung onto the car until they paid up.
That may have got them offering something better.

  • Hi

Thanks for answering. I think its my insurance company. Certainly no one from my insurance company has told me otherwise - though I suppose that doesnt mean anything :).

I couldnt hang onto the car, it was towed from the accident site. I will have to give it a couple more days and chase them up. Fortunately I'm not desparate for the money as I dont need to get another car quickly as I can get to work by bus or on foot.

My main concern is that its just not been passed on and so my details are sat languishing somewhere!

    Thanks again.

You should be gathering evidence to back up your feelings over this, and be pushing for a settlement.

Now you no longer have a hire car your insurer has no incentive to settle quickly!
  • Thanks, I'm chasing them up today. I thought it may be that they have no real incentive to sort things out. Will re post when I find anything else out. I had wondered if anyone had had any dealings with this particular firm called Hoopers in Liverpool. Will keep calm and carry on :). Thanks again.

I thought you were entitled to the hire car until they had settled the claim? That's what Liverpool Victoria insurance co. say. Otherwise you are left without a car and without the money to buy another. I think forgetmyname meant 'hang on to your hire car' until they had paid up.

The LV courtesy car is an add on to the policy and provides a car for "up to" 14 days only.

Maybe a third party was to blame for your write off?

I have correctly posted the current cover LV provide, (you only get a car following a write off if you pay for the add on option).
