NPB strike... Unconfirmed address

Options
A buyer of mine paid £300+ for an item via Paypal though with an unconfirmed address. I stood my ground and said that I would have to refund the money and he would need to confirm his address. Speaking to them via phone, he insisted that he wouldn't be able to confirm the address ( it was a business address ) as it was his mates account. He also has no other way to pay, either cheque, postal order, bank transfer etc, which sounded a little odd considering he appeared to be a busy businessman working both here and abroad ! Anyways, he said that he wouldn't hold anything against me if I refunded the payment and resold the item. This we decided to do.

Now, I don't normally bother reclaiming Ebay fees if they're not for very much but this transaction would be for £10 or so. Now, do I trust him with a mutual, and maybe have him not bother and me be out of pocket, or do I start a NPB process stating that the buyer had an unconfirmed address and stand more chance of getting my fees back ?!? He 'seemed' fair enough so I wouldn't want to p!ss him off by sending through something that would lead to a potential strike ! I'm presuming that this second option would leave him with a strike ?

If he can't be bothered to do the confirmation for you, plus who doesn't have a cheque book etc? I would put in a dispute for npb, there is even an option to say they did not have a confirmed address.
It also depends on whether you mind geting a potential neg if he responds to the dispute. ( I would risk the neg as you have a clear response for it;) ).

  • Don't do a mutual, do a NPB. I quite often refund payments where the address is not confirmed - and almost always they confirm their address and repay.

I thought the same... Odd, but he insisted

Typically, I'm a 100% bod who doesn't like the thought of the inevitable neg at some point :o

If then, I issue the NPB with the option stated as 'no confirmed address', has he an option to respond to this which enable me to have my fees and for him NOT to get a strike ?

He's insisting that he can't confirm the address though as he's using a friends account..... sounds a well dodgy one really ! This is going to sound very racist and my sincere apologies to anyone that I may offend.... he ( and his name ) sounded African ( Nigerian ? ) which doesn't help your confidence after all you hear about scams !!

I used to think that I had to hold on to my 100% at any cost but now I would definitely risk a neg over something like this, he obviously is not going to pay and there is a 50/50 chance whether he will even respond if he is not an ebay regular-quite likely if he's not confirmed.
I think he would get a strike in any of the dispute options, you will definitely get your fees back as long as you don't go for a mutual, I dont think you can trust him enough.
bang your npb in and hope that he never resopnds (as I have done with a dodgy buyer).
out of curiosity, how long has he been a registered user/ fb etc?

you really have 2 choices, npb and risk a neg, or mutual-spell it out exactly what he has to do for this, he has to say he no longer wants the item, although I think if he doesn't respond to the mutual you automatically get your fvf back.

I wonder if this account genuinely belongs to a friend, or whether he's hijacked it?

Out of curiousity I could call the company registered as the Paypal address and see if this guy works for them ? Actually, that's a point... it's his name on the Paypal payment and not his friends ? I guess it's not a posible hyjack then ?
