Playstation 3 - storage server?

i want to buy the new 12GB PS3, fit a 1TB hard drive and then install FreeBSD using ZFS.

Does anyone know if this is possible? Has anyone managed to do something similar with Linux for these Playstation units?

I can't seem to find a definite answer online, and many articles seem a bit out of date.

    Not possible.

    Sony removed the alternate os functionality a long time ago.

    They made a great console, but then every update, removed functionality, features or services, that made the console any good. With the recent introduction of cinavia, I've binned mine.

    I can't really see why you would want to do this rather than go for a PC unit which would be cheaper, easier and do the job better really. I did try Linux on the PS3 when it was supported but even the official YDL didn't work that well, everything felt quite restricted compared to a normal PC.

    Even if you could do it I would urge you to spend the money on a proper NAS instead, you should be able to get two 1TB drives and a NAS box for the price of the PS3, which will provide protection for your data.
