As a family we've got £600 to spend on a SatNav for my brothers 50th birthday - he wants one you can use both in the car and in the hand.
Which are the best on the market? Thanks, Michael.

TomTom are probably the best.
If you've got that much to splash around, consider buying a PDA, then buy the TomTom Navigator software to install on it.Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!0 -
Which Magazine gave the SNOOPER syrius (UK & Ireland) as their 'BestBuy' .
[It was also the most expensive] http://www.snooper.co.uk/snooper-syrius.htm?
The Tom Tom Go 510 came secondI'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0 -
My mum bought herself a Tomtom ONE after getting frustrated with PDA GPS. It was on offer (UK map version) in Staples for £159.99 plus free case and strap plus USB charger. It's also easily small enough to be handheld as well."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Nowadays you dont have to give an arm and a leg for sat nav.
The TomTom One is a good satnav and is cheap to buy.
I used to have the top of the range TomTom GO 910 and all the additional features it had, I never used. So I sold it and got a TomTom One and got some of my money back
PDA's can be a Pain in the backside to use.0 -
Which of these is the best handheld or bicycle use. Thanks for all your help.0

They all have a battery in them so can be used without connecting them to a source. the tom tom one is powered/charged by a usb connection simple.
The others 310 510 710 use a cradle that is connected to a power source, the advantage is that you dont have to mess connecting the cable you just drop the unit on the cradle and it charges.
The only problem I can see if you intend to use it on a bike there are no mounts available for any of the tom tom units unless you buy the rider version which is designed for bikes but motor bikes I belive and are waterproof. there is someone selling the rider mount on ebay, but I cant quite see if it uses the same type of holder as the other tom toms.
How about just buy him a decent large scale map book, after all he is getting on a bit and you will spend weeks showing him how to use this new fangled technology. Ohh and the phone calls when he is in the middle of nowhere telling you it isnt working as the battery has gone flat and he hasnt plugged it in. With a bit of luck a large scale map book will still be readable with his 50 year old knackered eyes. :rotfl: :rotfl:
Find out how much he plans on useing it out of the car, you will find there are better devices for hand held use than tom tom's and with your budget you will easily be able to buy both devices. For basic sat nav all you need is tom tom one v2 if he wants to go to europe buy the one with european maps. they are under £200 then buy a handheld GPS.0 -
When you say in the hand what do you mean? Do you mean for hillwalking etc. or finding his way around cities? It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
you can pick up a reasonable (new) TomTom for about £300 max - depending on where he drives to/from really. TomTom Europe iirc will do the average driver.
As mentioned TomTom Rider is an additional option should you wanna buy both, but keep away from PDAs0 -
I use a TomTom ONE and it's been great. Has an option for walking (i.e. not driving). Battery lasts a couple of hours at least. Note that mains charger has to be bought separately.0
