Army housing help

Hi. My fianc! has just been offered a posting with the mpgs just it's further away than we hoped and he couldn't commute. I know once we get married we can get housed near the base but I currently have a council house and a 17 year old daughter who starts uni next September. She would be coming home in the holidays as uni accommodation dosnt allow you to stay there anyways. That and she wants to. My worry at the moment is that because of her age and studies she is not classed as a dependent child and won't be entitled to a room in the house. I couldn't move if that was the case. Any advice for a confused woman lol

There are not many 1 bedroom qtrs around, so the liklihood of being offered one is practically 0. Therefore you will have a spare bedroom.

  • Thanks for your reply. Maybe I should of stated I have a 12 year old boy too so I would need 3 rooms
  • Sarah, try this website,

Give the Housing allocation enquiries a call, depending on where you are then the houses might all be 3 bed anyway. I can't remember the rules exactly, but I think under 18 and in full time education they are classed as dependant (can't remember whether the dependancy finishes at 18 or when they actually finish the full time education, sorry)
  • I have always had 3 bed properties with 2 girls, they don't often have 2 beds and when they do these usually go to the people with no children, incidentally where is the posting to?
  • Thank you for your replies I feel a bit better now. Still going to miss him before we get married tho. He is going to middle wallop. Which is quite a drive from here so he will be going without me till we get married
  • Aww hun, I always missed mine when he was away but the good thing about MPGS is that once you are married and settled in your quarter it will be so very rare that he has to go anywhere x

Yeah I know how it feels already as he was navy before so he was hardly ever home. If not deployed for 6 months he was at sea training. In a year he spent 9 weeks at home. That's what prompted him to make the move to mpgs. We was just really hoping for a local post. Once we are married I wouldn't mind moving about as I would be going to and with mpgs if you want promoting then you have to be prepared for it too. But that's all good :)
  • How old is your daughter ? as she is classed as a dependant up to the age of 23 cannot remember the JSP doc tho, May be worth speaking to welfare at the unit that you will be based at.
  • Hi. She is 17. Will be 18 in January Does that mean she has to move out at 23? Sorry it's just all new to me. He will check when he joins next month I'm just a worrier
  • Dependant on the area if there is no 3 beds available you will be allocated a 3 bed private hiring, At 23 they no longer consider her as a dependant unless she is classed as special needs (not the right words I know) but if you dont move in that time you would still have a 3 bed and could still technically stay there but if you were moved she would not class as a dependant.

Have you applied for housing yet ?
