New Boiler but No Invoice from Installer !

Options
Hi, I have just had a new combi boiler fitted for my tenants by a gas engineer who also services the appliances for me at the property.
Is it usual for a tradesman to supply and fit a brand new boiler but not give me any paperwork (ie: no invoice for the boiler). All i have is an invoice from him saying the price for supply and fit + the amount.
My concern is, what happens if the boiler fails as i dont have any proof of purchase. He says there is a small label on the boiler for contact details - is the normal, and is this enough?

Has he not left the service book with the installation details in it?
Mine shows the details of the installer and the date, amongst other things. What's he said about your gas safe certificate?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

The new boiler MUST be certified with Buildings Regulations certificate. Without this

    a) it is illegal and
    b) you'll have problems when you sell the property

Either the council can inspect (at a cost) the installations and give you a certificate, or, more commonly, your GasSafe registered installer (he IS gasSafe registered right?) can issue the certificate.

So, if he IS GasSafe registered, ask for Building Regs certification.

If he is NOT GasSage registered, he is breaking the law. report him to GasSafe or the H&S executive.

This is not the same as Building Regs certificate

The GSC just says it is SAFE (ie not leaking gas), not that it complies with Building Regs.

An invoice is a request to pay, you wouldn't usually get two and it is not a proof of purchase. Do you mean you have a quotation but no receipt for payment? If he is your regular engineer why haven't you asked him for a receipt for your tax records and the guarantee?

Yes i know the Gas Cert is different and covers all gas appliances in the property, I have a new certificate as i had it done before it was due so that there was no lapse without one.

I have received an invoice from him, but what i expected was an invoice for the actual purchase of the boiler, like you would for anything you buy anywhere, washing machine, freezer ect ect and this is what i dont have. My question is, is this normal, once an engineer is appointed, do you only receive 'his' invoice.

I have just emailed gas safe register (thank you for the link above) to ask if they have received notification and to tell them i havent received the building regulations compliance certificate. I expect they are not there over the weekend, so if i havent heard anything monday morning I will ring them.
Thank you for all your advice so far.

Your installer should usually register the boiler within 30 days of its installation, sometimes we forget and Gas Safe don't usually create if its not done within this time frame but may give him a gentle reminder to get it done. The actual notification to the local Building control office is your responsibility legally although he should do this for you through Gas Safe for the registration fee we pay when notifying a boiler. I don't know about your local council but if they find its not notified and decide to pursue it, its you they chase not him as you employed him.
You don't require a gas safety certificate for the boiler until its been installed for one year as its taken that he carried out all the relevant checks but, he must fill out the "benchmark" at the back of the manufacturers Installation instructions to give some proof he commissioned the boiler as per specs.
If he paid for the materials and didn't ask for a seperate cheque for the merchants then the materials invoice is his as it will be going through his books.
So long as he registered the appliance with the manufacturers then you have a valid warranty.
Ring them on Monday its faster 0800 408 5500
Just in case he does fail to come up with the goods just mention Gas Safe it usually works.

I'm still not 100% sure what you mean, but I think you mean receipt not invoice? An invoice you usually get after work is done but before you have paid, a receipt you get after payment. Yes you should have a receipt for your tax records if you have now paid.

I did not get a receipt for the boiler any of the appliances installed when I bought my new property, nor the appliances which were installed when I replaced the kitchen.

He may not want to supply a receipt for the boiler purchase as you would then know how much he paid for the boiler. This may be substantially less than you thought.

You could contact the boiler manufacturer and check with them what they would they require as proof of purchase for a guarantee claim.

If you are not happy, do not pay his invoice.

Why would he give you a receipt for the boiler? No doubt the fitter has got some sort of trade discount for it which he is not obliged to pass on to you. If he gave you the paperwork for this it would reflect a different price to which he has charged you.

Who manufactured the boiler? Does the manufacturer have some sort of registration scheme for the boiler? This would be your usual method of registering the purchase and will be enough for warranty purposes. Your boiler should have a serial number or other manufacturers unique mark upon it anyway so they can tell when it was manufactured.
Many manufacturers will offer you an additional year of warranty simply for registering.

I had a new Baxi 32k installed earlier this year alongside with other plumbing work on the heating system. The gas fitter quoted me a price for each stage of the job with the boiler coming as a 'supply and fit'. I don't know how much the boiler cost the fitter as it was all added in for the job.
He talked me through the warranty process and advised me that I could get the installation independently checked if I wished and that in due course I would receive a building regs certificate which I did.

You need to chase up the warranty details on your boiler, this is much more important than trying to get an invoice which reflects the actual cost of the boiler. Recover the serial number from it and ring the manufacturer tomorrow and ask how you go about registering it.

The gas fitters invoices you will of course keep and hand them to your accountant in due course who will write the cost of the boiler and installation work down against your tax as essential repairs and renewals.

The boiler manufacturer would not normally require a proof of purchase, they can track it's manufacture from the unique serial number and that fact it has not been registered before. Of course had it been bought second hand these things would stand out like a sore thumb.
