A pocket guide book with a fold out map (WH Smith) was a godsend when I was in NY.

Also trip advisor's top activities might give you an idea for tickets of some kind.

It doesn't have to be a Broadway show, maybe tickets to a museum or something akin to a London Walk? When we were in Chicago I booked a 2 hr 'foodie' walking tour; it turned out to be our favourite activity!
  • A crumpled city map? Quite good for shoving in your bag and not worrying about tearing it or crumpling it up

I can't post the link as I'm a new user but they sell them on Amazon

as a teacher I'd actually recommend not going overboard on the map front. She will probably get a little free time whilst away but will be given very clear instructions from her teachers as to where she is/isn't allowed to go.

  • Some good ideas...my dd is also going to NYC in the summer with her school. She is mostly getting dollars for Xmas which I was going to slip into a large Hershey's bar! But a wee NYC hamper might be a fab idea for her.
  • I'm loving the music idea - although it would be on a disc that she can upload to her itunes so save the extra cost!!! Don't think I'm going to bother with the map/guide book thing, as pavlovs_dog says, I'd expect them to have an itinerary and won't be able to do that much on her own.

I've got her a NYC phone cover from ebay, and also a packet of tissues with yellow taxis on them, and have some great ideas from the suggestions so far. I think a trip to poundland will be in order on Saturday to see what I can pick up in the DVDs that have been suggested.
Also defo going to get the toiletries and stuff for her and other things - and she can stuff herself stupid on the sweets and things!

Anyone any idea where I can get Hersheys from?

  • Sainsburys have Hershey's and I think morrisons. Morrisons sell Reece's - nut and caramel type USA chocolate made by Hershey's. It is an acquired taste!

  • Great thanks, we don't have either Sainsbury's or Morrisons here (24 hour Asda and Tesco) but there's a Sainsbury's near where I work - will try and remember to pop in there one day this week.

This is a great little map, well detailed and folds down to approx credit card size, so easy to slip into a pocket when not in use. Pointing out all the main locations as well as street markings at the sides. Double sided and laminated.

http://www.cybercandy.co.uk/ Plenty of american themed candy here. :)
  • Asda sell Hershey's chocolate and Hershey's Kisses in our local one. We've actually ended up buying an M&M sweet dispenser today from Sainsburys, bit more than I was going to spend but I thought it looked cool...will stash the dollars somewhere in there.
