earphone sounds- only one working via laptop

hi
when using earphones connected to my laptop, only one side now works, the rights side is fine but no noise/volume on the left, not even buzzing or hissing, i checked the usual left/right mixer but thats ok, so i assumed one of my earphones is bust so i ordered another but the new one has the same issue, only right ear piece has volume, the left doesnt. when removing the earphones, the laptop speakers both work fine.
so its not the earphones but the laptop? i checked the mixer setting again and its central. dont know what else to check?
i have a HP G6 pavilion laptop, with windows 7. what can it be? is it possible the earphone jack on the laptop is faulty? (if so wouldnt both sides stop working?)
i hope its just a setting that im not aware of that my kids may have messed up as opposed to a faulty hardware.
Thanks

OP has said that he got a new pair and has tried these too, with same results.
From the symptoms described, I'd say it's most likely to be the 3.5mm socket in the laptop that's faulty.
"is it possible the earphone jack on the laptop is faulty? (if so wouldnt both sides stop working?)"
Yes, it's possible, and I wouldn't necessarily expect both sides to fail at the same time. I would say it's more likely that one or the other would go.0 -
are these easy to self replace? is there anyway to test this before taking it to a pc repair shop who will charge just to make sure its definately faulty?
would usb to 3.5mm jack adaptor be of any use? to bypass the laptops jack?

Is it a Realtek HD audio device or similar? If so make sure you have the correct HD audio drivers installed and not Windows default drivers or the SD version.
We once took receipt of a batch of Toshiba D300's which experienced this exact problem. After messing about for a couple of hours we found that the Realtek standard drivers had been sent instead of the HD.0 -

not sure how to check this.
we havent changed any of the settings ( unless kids did something)
do you know if this will work and bypass the jack in the laptop?

edit- just realised its a mini usb, i need a standard usb0 -
i would download puppy or another boot version of linux, then try the sound out, as it is often easier than looking for things, that is hardware.
Basically most have either a mixer slider or a left/right volume controls and may have a mono speaker setting too.
of it is not hardware. and you cant find the problem, then remove the audio and re-install it again.0 -
im going to take the easier option ( and not mess with the laptop) and buy this
http://www.impact-computers.co.uk/usb-3d-stereo-audio-adaptor.html?___store=default&gclid=COSZ-eCXxbMCFaTKtAod3x8AHA
it looks like i can plug this into the usb port, and then plug my earphones into this adaptor instead. hopfully this will work. dont really want start removing and reinstalling things on my laptop as i will probably make things worse!0 -
you just have to be a bit more careful with bits sticking out of the sides. Also takes 1 portEuphoria1z wrote: »im going to take the easier option ( and not mess with the laptop) and buy this

, so possibly another port for wireless mouse? another port for usb mem stick and some laptops only have 2 ports.
a linux boot cd is really easy and quick, just do not install it to your hard driveEuphoria1z wrote: »dont really want start removing and reinstalling things on my laptop as i will probably make things worse!
saying that it is much cheaper than having your laptop repaired.0 -

- Select your exact model (you'll find it on the sticker on the base)
