Estimated Costs Of Repair - VW Golf
Options
Hi,
I have the chance of getting an N Reg Golf for free, it is an MOT failure and has lain unused since January.
I have been told that:
Drive shaft needs fixed
it needs a new exhaust
it needs a new gearstick
the clutch and gearbox 'might need looking at'
Can anyone give me a rough idea of the costs involved of putting this car through is MOT?
Thanks for any help.

Drive shafts - circa £70 each from motor factors.
Exhaust - depends on cats, but a few hundred
Gearstick - get one from scrapyard
Clutch - around £200 fitted
Gearbox - if problem then source from scrapped car
I'm guessing at least £1K.Happy chappy0 -
I'm no mechanic but the figure I had in my head was around 1k too.
I guess if it's this much it's probably not worth saving considering the age.
What do you reckon?
Thanks for the response.

It could be done a fair bit cheaper DIY and if a scrapped car with all the bits on was sourced. However, if you don't have the time or space to do it that way then I'd probably look for a working car.Happy chappy0

£1000 for the work needed sounds right. Bear in mind that after getting all that sorted, there may be other problems which might cost you more. Personally, I think you can ge a better car for £1000 than an N reg Golf. For that sort of money, a Mk3 Astra on a R plate is possible. I used to have an R plate Fiat Brava 1.4 which I picked up for undr £6000 and I have seen a T plate up at £1000 recently. They may not be quite as good as Golfs in general but I'm pretty sure a T plate Brava will have a better spec, cheaper to run etc too.If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the opinions. I've decided against the car, on further inspection it had done over 150,000 miles and the gearbox was a bit dodgy, so wasn't really worth saving.
Cheers
