Default Search Provider Setting....Stuck!

Each time I launch Internet Explorer, I am getting this message:
"A program on your computer has correupted your default search provider setting for Internet Explorer".
"Internet Explorer has reset this setting to your original search provider, Google".
"Internet Explorer will now open search settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providers".
I either have to say OK or close this text message box, either way it bounces me to a list of alternative search providers (eg Yahoo, Bing etc).
BUT from there it simply will not let me change the default from Google. I cannot even delete the default Google as it's the only one which has the 'delete' option shaded out.
Doesn't matter which alternative option I click on and say "select as default" it simply doesn't happen.
Any suggestions (not too 'techie' terminology if possible, it's a bit 'over my head').

When you search for something does it go to a dodgy site?
