First of all I want to point out that all this is for an account I closed several years ago, upon closing the account i didn't have any overdraft, or was not in any debt wth them, also I cancelled all my Direct Debits beforehand.
Recently I received a letter from a Debt Collection Agency for nearly £900 worth of charges for an account I once had with Lloyds TSB. I rang the company to query what these charges were for, and they said they were for overdraft payments and that was all they could tell me, after which they asked me to set up a payment plan. I sent a letter to the bank asking for proof of these charges including bank statements, from which they have ignored my request. I keep receiving more letters from the collection agency, whom I have told that as far as Im concerned I dont have the debt and will not make any payments until I have some sort of proof of what I am paying for.
What can I do about this? Is there any way to get rid of all this hassle? My only problem is that I dont have any proof of closing the account, or any account details for that matter.

You can treat this account and reclaim charges like anyone else in the same position with a closed account. Make a Subject Access Request as per usual under the Data Protection Act paying the £10 fee for your 6 years details. Provide the bank with your full name and address with postcode and your date of birth. State what type of account you held and the local branch address might be helpful too.
If you had wages paid into this account at any time your employer may have your account details or if any direct debits were paid from it the company concerned may be able to help.
You are entitled to proof of the debt from the collection agency so dont be intimidated. There's some useful links here on what to do to stop them harrassing you:

Good luck
