E.ON - Gas Meter Removal - And Law question.

Hello,

Friend has an house with their meter, but has never used gas at his place (Uses E.ON electric though) and he needs the meter removed. (He said maybe they changed name now E.ON or something?)

Who removes the meter and can it be done for free? or what is the charge? (Number would be great also)

Also is he correct in that by law he cannot do anything to the meter? (He has a friend who works for a gas company who could remove it for free potentially but he's not done it because he says he don't think he's allowed, for example he wanted to take the batteries out but did not)

Also forgot to mention, the previous owner of the house had a debt with them (Something like 3 grand) would that make them decline any potential removal at the address?

Thanks In Advance.

Why doesn't your friend use any gas when the previous owner used £3k's worth of gas more than they paid for?

Why does your friend want the meter removed? Just get it moved to a no standing charge tariff (if not already on it)
The property will also probably be worth more with the gas service remaining connected.

Edit: Why doesn't 'your friend' seek advice from his own parents as it sounds like this is the first time he has lived away from them, and with you having always lived with your parents, it does sound like the blind leading the blind otherwise.

If he wants the gas meter removed he has to ask the supplier of said meter as it is their property.

Also, often, it can be an act of complete insanity to do this.
Dual fuel tariffs are significantly cheaper often than single fuel, and there is no obligation to use any gas in any I've found.

    Thanks for the replies.

He has no need for gas ever since living there. Hot water comes from boiler, electric shower, electric cooker and he uses a burner for house heating, so it's all water, electric + wood/coal.

He needs it removing as he's having an extension and new conservatory, the meter is an obstruction and in the way.

How does he proceed with that?

Yeah that's what he was saying, I mean he was saying he was sure he could not touch it due to law etc, so I guess it's down to ringing them and asking how much they charge?

As I understand it, it may not simply be the meter that needs removing.
Building over gas pipes has its own regulations, the gas pipes may need removed, or at least the end re-sited.

He needs to ask his supplier to remove it, they will also request that the service is capped off at the road.

If your friends gas company touches the meter or even removes the meter he will be breaking the law and your friend will be liable for tamper charges.

    Section 2b Gas Act.

Remember by doing this he will greatly reduce the potential selling price of the house if he decides to move in the future because it will cost loads to get a new gas pipe installed especially if the distance to the road (main) is over a few metres.

When you say "Hot water comes from boiler", what boiler? How is it powered?
