Rental Property Notice - End Of AST

At the end of an AST is it necessary to give 1 full month's notice? Or can you just finish, leave and stop paying at the end of the 6 month period?
As an added complexity, but as a separate question, what if the letting agency had issued a S21 (albeit a flawed one) upon handing in the said AST, as a matter of routine?

It is not necesssary to issue notice at the end of the fixed term you CAN just leave , but it is sensible to give notice and arrange the final inspection etc.
Is there any reason why you would not want to give any notice0 -
When you rent for a fixed term, the contract is for that fixed term. LLs like to request a month's notice, and of course, it is courtesy to give notice to allow LL time to make plans for your departure. However, if you leave and return keys before midnight on the last day, you need not give any notice at all.
If you stay into the next day, an SPT arises, and you do need to give 1 month's notice.
The S21 has no bearing whatsoever, as it does not end the tenancy. If it has been issued to co-incide with the last day of the fixed term, it allows the LL to apply to court the day after it expires. Obviously, if you have proof that it is flawed, it is very unlikely to succeed in court, and LL would have to issue another 2 month's notice to be able to apply for possession.0 -

Nothing personal, but we're buying a house and a possible completion date for this month has been mooted, so we would have no choice but to give very short notice (would never give any notice before exchange so it could be a matter of days notice).
Realistically, completion this month looks unlikely.0
