OMG!!! £600 for the last 2 months gas and electricity!!!!

OK so I am in shock.

I give regular meter reading to EON and as per yesterday I was about £270 in credit for both electricity and gas.

My last bill was was on the 12th September. Anyway entered my readings yesterday and I am now £320 odd in debit!!! Allegedly we spent £600 in not even 2 months!!!!

I called EON who checked my usage and said that all is fine. However on my ebill it says that my gas usage has gone up from 45.5 khw/day last year to 192kwh/day!!!! How can that be!!!!

I got made redundant and was home from the 12/09 to the 08th October and I admit I put the heating on a bit during that time (but not excessively!!). Went back to work on the 08th October and has only put the heating on in the evening (for about 5 hours) and for the past couple of weeks an hour in the morning.

Anyway my question is: Could it be that my boiler hasn't been serviced regularly (I know it is not good!!!) that cause that massive rise in consumption???

Wish me luck this winter coz at this rate I am not going to be able to afford to heat my home. Switched the heating off now, really worried for this winter though!!!

Rant over!

Check over the bills carfully. Do the counts on the bill match those that are on the meter?
Is there a problem with the meter or maybe an undetected leak?
How often do you read your meter? Its unusual as I am sure there is a safeguard against entering data which is wrong, but double check the amount entered online vs the one on your meter.
How often do you enter your readings? If you have not done it for a while maybe they have billed you with estimates and have underestimated the reading..

I take it the bill is due to gas, and not down to electric reading?

Hi. Thanks for that but my readings are correct as I have given them myself and double checked them tonight. About £100 of that is electricity which is fine.

A friend of mine suggested maybe a gas leak although I never smelt anything. Getting a service done asap and hopefully it will find out if there is a leak!

Easiest way to check for a leak is to ensure all gas appliances are off (well appart from the piolt light) and check the meter. To use that much it should be wizzing around like no tomorrow!

    Thanks for the advice.
