No sound on pc

For a month or so the sound has been lost on my pc. When the problem first occurred i was able to get sound for start up and messenger but when i tried to play music it displays a message stating the system is in use by another user/program. Now i get no sound at all. I have reinstalled realplayer and windows but no luck?

Any tips pls

go into control panel and set the sound in there,

thanks that worked with the music on realplayer etc , but i still cannot hear videos, and interviews and messages.
