Buying an appliance warranty from previous owner

I was assuming that the 'gain' would be the potential lower price. This extract from a website explains it better than I could:
Although extended warranties are available long after the initial purchase is made, warranties are usually offered at the lowest cost right after purchase. The reasoning behind this is simple: the newer the merchandise, the less likely it is to break down.
So if I pay pro-rata for the remainder of the warranty, presumably I'm getting a better deal than I could get now myself. (I'm trying to prove this by getting some quotes, but having visited about 10 websites just now I'm struggling to get a quote at all!)0
