Kindle display problem

My Kindle has developed a screen problem where a small area stays black permanently even when it is switched off. I spoke to their customer support who said that as it is older than one year, all they could do is offer me a small discount on a new one. I'm not too happy with that and wonder if anyone know what my consumer rights might be. The Kindle hasn't been dropped or misused in any way. Thanks.

A hard reset may help, but worth a try as it costs nothing.
Simply hold the power button for 20-30 seconds, the screen will flash and you get the boy under tree picture. The kindle reboots from there.
You won't lose your books doing this.

There was a report on Watchdog about failing Kindles recently, perhaps check the BBC watchdog site.
However items must be durable, have a word with trading standards.0 -

I don't believe there is a way of contacting Trading Standards directly. You have to ring Citizen's Advice. When I did this the person I spoke to just read out information that I could see myself on the Internet. Points that I was unclear about she could not help with. It was a waste of time. Does anyone know how to make direct contact with Trading Standards?0
