what to buy for a seafood platter?

im hosting boxing day lunch for myself and dh, mil and fil and my 3 kids. my mum and stepdad may also appear.
in the quest for something different to serve i have come up with the idea of a sea food platter.

i could do with some ideas as to what to serve? at the moment the budget is not a problem as i am gaining ideas and will then work out my budget.

ideas so far are;
mussels
king prawns
crab claws
dressed crab
lobster
bowl of prawn cocktail
mini salmon and cream cheese bagels

any other ideas?

also ideas on sauces to serve?

and finally what if anything, would you also serve?
i was thinking to have a basic salad available (lettuce cucumber onion)
and maybe some rolls
anything else?

Ooh.. this is my kind of food, I love fish!

What about smoked mackeral? Im currently eating Mr Ts finest piri piri makeral strips on rye for my lunch. Delish. Its quite a strong flavour though so not everyone likes it.

A salmon en croute? Easy to make and can be eaten hot or cold. Mr Ts has side of salmon on offer atm for £10.

King prawns could be served with a sweet chilli sauce?

And I have seen tubs of rollmops in Asda (I think - though it's been a while since I went in there last).

There are also those little salmon appetiser sort of things (3rd row down, 4th from left on this page which you must be able to make cheaper!

What about Scottish Smoked Salmon or a Spinach and Salmon Roulade
    Recipe such as this: http://www.food.com/recipe/spinach-and-salmon-roulade-86407

I normally do the filling with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Easy recipe but looks impressive

I don't really think that sauces are that necessary if you buy good quality shellfish but I would include whelks , winkles and oysters rather than smoked salmon, otherwise you're branching out into fish rather than having a seafood platter..
  • i love crab sticks! i know they are a bit 1970s but it could be a worthwhile addition.
a basic green salad sounds good (peppery watercress in there wouldbe good) but i wouldnt put the onion in personally.
fresh crusty bread - possibly home made if you have time. something like a granary or walnut bread

I would do caviar, you can get this really cheaply in lidl at the moment, I make little baskets out of lemons and stuff in the caviar. I agree with some smoked fish mackeral and salmon, and I would do blinis and also brown bread. I have a large rimmed platter that I fill with crushed ice and I put another platter inside on top. For sauces i would do a dill mayonniase made of home-made mayonnaise with a squirt of lime and lots of chopped dill. I would put also have sweet chilli sauce and marie-rose dressing. I like to also have some capers and gherkins on the platter.

Lemon mayonnaise is good with seafood, you could put a lemon mayonnaise and a seafood sauce on the platter in scallop shells.

I would definitely have some lemon wedges for decoration, and cucumber slices with a fork run down the outside for pattern. And, either as gibson123 suggests, little lemon baskets with caviar or crustades images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3xLISgjNqcFVDhq5WGLzm8_qv4AqSpC007bSEDjfJSL9oyUtr2rPYLg with it in. Plus, lemon mayonnaise and/or dill dressing.
If you are having Marie Rose dressing, little cherry tomatoes echo the colour nicely.
    Lovely idea. :)

since when did salmon not come from the sea?

re OP. great list apart from the cocktail bit as like others have said good prawns dont need it and kills the taste hence why the other dips for me are better and some simple lemon slices.

i would also never buy cooked or from a supermarket. fish markets are great if there is one local ( glasgows is brill) followed by some Chinese cash and carry's as many sell live and/ or uncooked shelfish.
