The slots inside the bank and I've never had one go astray. If of course you couldn't replace it or time was very critical then you might like to see it deposited. But I can veryify online in the evening and call the bank if I needed to. As gromitt says you get a photo copy.

After all many businesses deposit large sums afer banking hours and many of my transactions are electronic fed by other people so I can't sit in a queue with them.

I think these checks are just 'flavour of the month' with banks. Now and then some team leader gets a bee in his bonnet about fraud prevention and tells all his staff to start checking every transaction above n amount.

Happened to me a year ago with HBOS for a short time and then drifted away . . .

ETA - sorry OP, back to your questions - my transactions varied from four to five figures, and I didn't try to stop their interference. They just stopped after a couple of weeks.
