If you are getting a new PC I recommend getting Vista.

However before you take the plunge make sure your software and hardware that you intend to use has had vista drivers released for it.

Just check the variuos website for drivers in support or download sections for your hardware and software and you will find out if they have relaesed drivers for vista.

Thats what I did beforehand and I have had no problems in running Vista.

Millionaire pretty much got it spot on.

Vista is an improvement over XP. It does take a little getting used to, more so for power users (which is why many don't like it) as you have to unlearn common habit.

On it's own, unless you get an excellent price, maybe hold off buying it just yet. If it comes with a pc you're buying, then that's fine and better to get than XP. Just as Millionaire mentions, make sure any scanners/printers etc... you already have will work with it.

In my opinion vista is xp with a few fancy graphics. If it comes with the laptop all well and good. if not its no loss. Hardware can be problematic until new drivers are released and be warned not all hardware manufacturers bother releasing new drivers for new operating systems so you may have to replace that scanner you bought with your Tiny pc 10 years ago:rolleyes:

Not one to miss an opportunity to slag off the Vista thing. Make sure you buy a powerful, expensive laptop becuse you'll need it to run all Vista's subplots.

An absolute min of a 1 Gbyte of Ram needed (more likely 2Gb when the service pack arrives), a dual core processor not more than a couple of months in production, and lots more money to buy the new printer and other stuff you might want to attach.

    Oh and by the way,
    you'll have no choice shortly.

Microsoft are pulling the pin on XP next January.

New team of Microsoft spin doctors required. This lot are awful.

i would say vista is not just xp with fancy graphics and put 32 bit version should not have been releasesd only the 64bit version and then you would see the difference it runs faster and it's more secure than xp home/pro,and vista 32 to start with .
i have been running vista 32 and vista 64 drivers are slowly coming out for them both (very slowly).
it's more stable that xp and i have found it hard to crash it has well , only do it twice put thats been down removing beta drivers (thats why there beta).
all the prgrams that i have tryed have work on both versions, the only thing thats stopped some programs working fully was the drivers more so for 64bit version .
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

Vista is fine, just make sure you get a decent spec machine. all of my peripherals worked OK with it and they're all fairly old. My Camera, Graphics Tablet and Printer were recognised by the OS and didn't require additional downloads. For my scanner I had to download a new driver from the Canon website.

Visa is by the nicest OS Microsoft have released so far. people keep saying it's just a fancy interface to XP but there are a lot of changes under the skin.

No idea about Windows mail as I use Thunderbird instead.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

And yet again... Dont believe all the stuff written about 1/2GB memory and dual-core cpu... I have Vista Premium running on an acer with 1.5Mhz celeron Processor and 512 MB ram (8MB taken for Video card). All it means is I cant use Aero but who cares.. It runs and boots faster than XP and has never given me any problems.. I use it for Website building/maintenance, using MS office and watching/recording TV, Browsing web and the usuall day to day stuff we all do as well as having it hooked up to my 37inch LCD so I can watch my recorder programs as well.
