Well good luck in the future can I suggest you get yourself a prepaid credit card you will find it useful for buying online in case you are not sure what it is, you can only spend the money that you have physically put onto the card so no debt but useful to have.

Hi Churchill33 - I see you have been up since the crack of dawn. Me too - I have just returned from the court as my hearing was at 0930 and like you I felt dreadful. Now I just feel a mixture of sadness and numbness. The jumping for joy has not materialised, neither has the weight being lifted - just sadness and numbness.

I keep looking at my stamped document and to be honest, I can't see that a piece of paper has that much power - but then I imagine it must be a bit like receiving a decree absolute for a divorce - the legal bit is done but the emotions have to catch up. After all, you say you struggled with debt for years so it stands to reason that it will take some time before the pain goes. bit like toothache really!

I am going to have a cup of tea and a cry I think - and sod's law - today is the only day that I have no messages from creditors on my phone and it is not ringing off the hook; usually by this time I have been inundated!

    Onward & upward

I hope you feel a bit better soon.

These things effect people differently. For some it's an immediate relief. For others that may take a few weeks or months of sinking in as you can't always switch these emotions on and off light a light. For some any real sense of relief may not come until say you are discharged and that you know it is done and dusted. Or for someone going through repossession it may not be until the hosue is sorted and any shortfall fallen into the BR that you feel a release. etc etc etc...

What I can say for sure is that it's the start of the process of sorting things and making them better. May take a while longer to get there in many cases, but you honestly do get there.

Yes all I felt was shame on the day even after court despite court being nowhere near as bad as I expected. Peace and relief has come though.

  • Thanks again everyone.

OhforPennies I thought about you this morning, we are now officially entwined as BR buddies- lol!

I too feel sad and emotional, my OH feels relieved and happy, I feel embarrased and weepy. Still, it's done, it was not painful, we didn't even see a judge. The only bad thing was being in a really small room full of other people at court for a myriad of reasons, and being able to hear their woes and them knowing we were declaring bankruptcy.

Still the court wasn't in our home town so at least we didn't bump into anyone we knew.

Going to grab a coffee now and try to de-stress....

  • BR buddies - now that HAS made me smile Churchill33 !!! If it helps - the tears have now stopped and maybe, just maybe there is a glimmer of relief; trick is to NOT LOOK BACK and wonder if I should have waited for that ever elusive miracle. I actually told myself that the BR WAS a miracle of sorts as I can now start again WITH A CLEAN SLATE. I then rang my creditors and gave them my BR number, advised that I was aware that they were no longer able to contact me at all and that if it hadn't been for their totally unreasonable demands, I would have been happy to continue to make payments, albeit small ones that I COULD actually afford :that it was never my intention to go BR and that I had asked them for time to allow me to complete my training so that I could seek better paid work and thus, settle my debts - but they simply piled on the pressure to the point where I had no alternative but to go BR. AND THEN I REALLY DID START TO FEEL BETTER. So Churchill33 - make those calls - it is empowering. no gloating, just a sense of empowerment.
