Tesco credit card charging interest for 'late' payment... which wasn't!

Hi All,
I'll try and keep this brief:
:mad::mad::mad:
OH and I have a Tesco Credit Card which we've used for most day to day purchases for the past 10 years. We pay it off in full on time every month and have never paid interest.
I noticed on checking our online statement today that we are being charged interest this month. On closer inspection we also paid interest last month, amounting to £101. I phoned to enquire why this had been added as we had paid in full as usual. I was told we'd paid late - on the 1st October when the due date was 30th September. I checked my records: I had put the payment through on the due date, 30th Sept - on time. I checked the calendar - it was a Sunday. This has never been a problem in the past - why should it present a problem now? I was told that since Tesco credit card broke away from RBS and became Tesco Bank the rules had changed and payments made at the weekend are now credited on the next working day, therefore my payment was considered late. Shouldn't customers have been informed about this change?
I argued the case with the rather obstructive individual at the end of the phone line who initially agreed with me that it was 'unfair' that a payment made by me on time should be considered late because the rules had changed but absolutely refused point blank to do anything about it. He agreed that our account has been very well managed over many years but refused to refund the interest payment as a gesture of goodwill.
We have asked for a formal complaint to be escalated and are expecting to hear from a Tesco Bank representative within the next 5 days. If we are unsatisfied can we take this further? Do we have a leg to stand on?:(:(:(

  • No, it's your responsibility!
  • Why on earth don't you set up a direct debit to avoid this sort of thing.

    Yes. You'll find their complaints process on their website.
    Do we have a leg to stand on?
    Well that rather depends on what the statement says about the time to allow for your payments to arrive.

    For example, if it says "please allow 3 working days for online/telephone banking payments" then you're on to a loser I'm afraid.

    For future reference the payment due by date on your statement means just that...the date the payment is due BY not due ON.

    If you always pay in full then you may wish to pay by DD in future. In the case in question your payment would have left your bank account on Monday 1st...and still not been classed as late. Better still, where Xmas Day and Boxing Day fall on a Monday/Tuesday your payment would have been taken on the Wednesday...and still not been classed as late.
  • What date does it show as being debited to your bank account?
    Sorry to say but each statement has ways to pay clearly written on the back - the changes are on there.

    Other than goodwill I'm afraid you have no leg to stand on.
