we will be doing a couple of long trips next year of about 100 days each - anyone know of an insurance company that will provide cover for travel insurance for annual multi trip of long stays and also one for buildings and contents insurance.

Amex do single trip up to 93 days or annual cover that allows up to 120 days. You also have all the backpackers cover which can be over a years cover and not all are actually designed for people slumming it in hostels etc.
As to Home, I dont know any off the top of my head that will give you normal terms for over 3 months of being unoccupied. Your probably best speaking to a traditional broker (not Swintons) who will be able to advise and quote for unoccupied home insurance if no standard cover providers will be able to assist.
Of cause if you get a friend to stay overnight once a month or such you'll find that it doesnt count as unoccupied and thus removes your problems0
