Surround sound system or soundbar

Thinking of upgrading our tv to a bigger set possiblly a 42inch lcd and adding a surround sound or a sound bar to enhance the sound quality. Im a big Star Trek fan so listening to some of the dvds will be fantastic! Just dont know what system to go for ? Ive seen a sound bar at Argos and surround systems for around £99,also 2.1 or 5.1 again not sure ?

Any one help please? thanks

    For £99, I wouldn't bother.

You'd be far, far better off saving a bit more and going to Richer Sounds for a standard stereo amplifier and pair of speakers. A beefy amp and two speakers will gave you far more enjoyment than a weedy 5.1 or sound bar....
  • Thanks on that, ive had tvs etc off Richer Sounds in the past, really impressed with the guys ,but im now living in the Scottish Highlands, well on an island to be precise so quite a way from them in Glasgow, thats why i considered Argos

I have an Orbitsound T12 soundbar I got for £300 from John Lewis (also available on Amazon) which doesnt offer spatial sound as people say, but does give incredible sound.

Samsung have made a system for a similar price that can either be a sound bar and sub or 2 speakers and a sub, which i would go for if my bar breaks.

I avoided 5:1 system due to the shape of my living room, the doors off it and having to pin wires all over the place.

a friend of mine has the onkyo system from Richer Sounds that can be bought as 2:1 and extend to 5:1 with a purchase of the additional speakers, its a really nice system. Do Richer Sounds not deliver to where you live?
  • we were looking at surround sound but it wouldn't really suit our room layout, got one of these instead & we're pretty impressed - yamaha YAS101 soundbar. obviously not full surround but quality is great & you still get the odd helicopter whizzing around the room! :)

I've been the soundbar route and they are not that good,
