  • ok, i know the reason why they are different and i can demonstrate why so i am in no doubt about that.
my issue is if my boss does not act on it very very soon then i will have to take action but i am worried about knowing but not acting sooner

Yes, but what is that reason? It's hard to advise you without it.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

If someone is fiddling the books you need to report it and make sure 'they' know you have identified this or it could come back on you.

What exactly is your boss not reporting? Is he understating costs or overstating revenue? How big are the differences, and are they material? As an accountant you will know straight away if they are material.

How long have you been with the company? I'm asking because if you've been there without enough length of service to be protected from immediate dismissal then putting your head above the parapet could end badly for you. Invariaby the messenger gets shot!

Is the company big? Listed? Privately owned? What is the context to this differnece that isnt being reported? If you are saying their are material errors and the company is listed then potentially the implications are serious. But if it is a small privately owned company and the differences arent that big, then issue is not so serious. If you can give a bit of context that would help with working out the right course of action.

Your professional body doesn't just exist to take money off you each year, it's there to support you in situations like this, where you suspect something dodgy may be going on, but you don't have the experience to know a) if your fears sound reasonable and/or b) what you should be doing.

I'm afraid I'm not with ACCA myself, so I don't know who would be best to call directly, but perhaps you could start with the ACCA connect helpline on 0141 582 2000 and ask to talk to someone regarding ethics.

I understand you're concerned, but this is why you need to talk to someone within your professional body for advice. If it turns out there is actually fraud going on, by speaking to your professional body rather than keeping your worries to yourself, you are protecting yourself against disciplinary action from them, as well as covering yourself legally. They will be able to advise you of any reports you need to make.
  • Thanks for your replies.
I will speak to acca today.
No sleep last night over this :-(
Not sure how constructive that last post was but it has worked by stressing me out further!

It's a spam post - just ignore it. I've reported it.

Hope the conversation goes well. Make sure you have proof of all this safely tucked away before reporting anything.

I've reported the spam post too.

Do talk to ACCA, you're not going to get the right support from anyone else. I really sympathise, it sounds as if you're in a tough situation. You should be able to discuss what's going on with someone at ACCA in more detail than you're (understandably) prepared to discuss here and get proper advice on what your next steps are.
  • I have spoken with acca this morning.they assure me that the steps i have taken were the correct ones i.e - going to my line manager. I will wait a day or two for my manager to act and if nothing is done then i will have to direct to the directors.
Thanks for the advice here. It helped get me through last night a little better and i can rest a bit easier knowing that i went the right way about things.

To ensure you protect yourself, generate an email trail to your boss confirming the information you have flagged up then leave it at that.
