dont know what to do!

Good evening

I'm in a bit of a muddle over what to do at work.

I have told my manager on several occassions that my reports show a different result from what is being presented in a higher level report. As of yet no action has been taken by my manager to correct this.

I am responsible for preparing the reports and and have highlighted my concerns but nothing has changed.

I'm now faced with the position of bypassing my boss and going straight to the MD if nothing is done.

My worry is that i have known about this for about 6 months and although i have told my boss and nothing has been done, i feel that i should have come forward earlier. I was under the impression that my boss would have spoken to someone and even if she does, i dont know if that necessarily excuses me from not saying something sooner.

I have communicated by email by concerns to my manager so have evidence that i tried to raise it but should I have come forward sooner? I'm really worried and stressed... :(

My boss sits in on management meetings so there was an opportunity my concerns to be passed on but they were not.

    what kind of reports?
  • The question you need to ask yourself is WHY are these reports different?

What happens to the report after you run it and send it up to your manager?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • all i can say is that they are financial reports.
I know why the reports are different.
The reports i pass to my boss are used to inform what month end journals are required to produce the month end accounts. The final reports are ultimately published by my boss. Once i pass my reports over that is the end of my work on the subject but i still know and the stress of knowing and nothing being done is getting the better of me :(

Accruals and the like? Are you sure they are correct of the boss is making mistakes?
  • yes, exactly, accruals.
I have double and triple checked the reports i produce so i am pretty sure they are correct. Of course, there is a chance i am wrong (and in a way i hope i am) but i really dont think they are wrong. I spoke to my boss today about it and they responded by telling me that they were also concerned about it.

    Why are they different?

This used to happen in a company I worked for - they would accrue income when it hadn't been earned and use it to push the share price up. We used to produce our own set of accounts and forecasts and each week my director had a stand up row with the other directors and - well, lets just say it didn't end well. He lasted 4 months and when the guy at the top died, they got found out. Strangely enough - the share price plummeted and the other directors disappeared one by one. Price waterhouse coopers were in like flynn and the next thing was - the company got sold for a song. Luckily I'd left by then.

If you hand on heart produce reports that are being manipulated by your manager then it may be likely that their manager is telling them to do it.

they will be able to tell you what the difference is. It is no good to say they are different. Why are they? Where do you pull your info from? Suppler statements? Uncleared cash?
  • that is my fear that my manager is under pressure from the people above to report what they want to hear. I have told my manager that our job is to report things how they are and the management in the business have to deal with that and respond to it. It is not our job to report what others want to hear.
I am qualified as an accountant also so although not a manager, from an ethical perspective i feel i must act if my manager does not.
But the main thing that worries me is my prior knowledge without doing anything. can this come back on me as i did inform my manager. I just wish i had acted a bit sooner but i am only recently qualified and lacked confidence and wasnt as aware before.
  • ok, i know the reason why they are different and i can demonstrate why so i am in no doubt about that.
my issue is if my boss does not act on it very very soon then i will have to take action but i am worried about knowing but not acting sooner
  • You don't have to be a qualified accountant to know that 2 + 2 = 4 and not 6.

What can you do? If this is the culture then you don't know whether it is your boss, their boss or right the way to the top.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
