Barclays re-issued my debit cards

Hi,

Out of the blue today I have received replacement cards for both of my Barclays current accounts. My existing cards still work, and hasn't been cancelled by me.

Does that mean that my account has been compromised somehow? It's annoying as the new card has a different number, so I will now need to change any linked transactions (of which I have many).

Thanks in advance.

Edited to add: I will call in the morning when they are available, but I thought I would see if the MSE brains trust could help!

  • No it might just mean they prefer you to hold newer cards. Im not sure you have to alter details, your actual account is the same so any debit to the old card will likely transfer through otherwise you could dodge a few bills that way :p

It's probably just a routine upgrade to the chip, that the old card will expire at the end of this month, or similar. Certainly nothing to worry about.

Your old card will keep working for a few days, to give time for your new card to be delivered.

Most transactions on your account (standing orders, direct debits, etc) will be completely unaffected. It's only if you've got recurring payments (that you set up using the 16-digit number on the front of your card, rather than sort code and account number) that you'd need to change those.
  • Are the new cards contactless (with a little radio signal logo on) and the old ones non-contactless?

Thanks for the responses. I do have a number of things set up that use the card number (paypal, amazon, weekly online food delivery etc). I know because once when I lost a card I had a number of payments bounce.

I'm applying for a mortgage, and having 1 missed CCard payment earlier in the year is really hurting it, so I'd rather avoid any more issues!

Anyway, it turns out that as part of the mortgage application, someone accessed my central name file in Barclays and changed my middle name. ie from S to Sarah. This has triggered all new cards and cheque books for everything. It's annoying as I going to change my name in January (having gotten married) so I will have to do it all again.

They have apologized, but now I have to spend the morning tracking down all payments. The problem is my card is registered at places I tend to use ad-hoc, rather than the weekly/monthly DD's.

Such is life I suppose. There are worse things that could happen. I was worried that someone had fraudulently accessed the account to try and get the cards re-issued to them, so I'm relieved it's just simple incompetence. :)
