Pregnant 2 weeks after miscarriage?

A friend told me she had had a miscarriage in the first few days of September (she told me about a week later).

She's phoned today to say that she's pregnant and has been scanned at 9 weeks. But 9 weeks ago she'd miscarried days before.

I'm confused. Is it possible to fall pregnant 2 weeks after a miscarriage?

It's definitely possible - I had a miscarriage at the beginning of September and am now about 9 weeks pregnant.

Pregnancies are dated from two weeks before conception, so your friend is 9 weeks but would have conceived 7 weeks ago.

That sounds about right, 40 weeks of pregnancy are counted from first day of last period, but you don't actually ovulate until around day 14, so you not really pregnant for the first 2 weeks of pregnancy.

So if your friend is 9 weeks today, she would have got pregnant around 7 weeks ago, around 2 weeks after her miscarriage, which is about when she would have ovulated.

In my experience you are usually advised not to try and conceive until one complete cycle after miscarrying, but that's only to make dating the pregnancy easier, as a miscarriage can cause delay with ovulating the following month, but I was told after my first miscarriage that there is no medical reason why you can't get pregnant immediately if you wish.

I have a friend who did exactly that and got pregnant after a miscarriage without have a period in between, its quite common I think.

Yes, I know that. Even so she must have conceived straight after her M/C.

    Yes it is totally possible.

Is there any reason you come across so sceptical?

Obviously you should not have sex after a miscarriage! I think after a m/c you can quite easily turn to your oh for support and often one thing leads to another...

She's a lover of the tall tales. ;)

I'm really happy for her and her partner. Just had no idea it could happen so quickly after a M/C. I thought the body would need more time to prepare for another pregnancy.

Crikey. The thought of sex 6 weeks after having my daughter was scary enough!
