hi all,

looking for some help, i have had great success with application forms in that every one i have applied for i have got an interview for, but i just cant seem to close the deal at the interview.

i tend to panic for some reason, i feel like i must come over as a liar about my application form ( it's all truthful i have no reason to lie, in fact if anything i dont write down alot of things i really could) as i just bumble along, best way i can describe it is it's like going in for an exam or speaking publically, i just turn into a gibbering wreck.

i am an outgoing person and have no problems speaking to people normally it just seems that when i am in an interview ( or speaking publically) my brain turns to mush and i forget what i want to say

i have tried meditation, i have tried deep breathing excercises, i have tried counting to five etc but nothing seems to work.

i am applying for jobs that i am over qualified and experienced for and yet i still cant get over what it is i want to

can anyone think of things i could try?

thanks in advance

I'd recommend joining a local toastmasters club. They are great for getting practice at speaking in public, and they give lots of helpful, pointers for improvement

First of all..... what actual feedback are you getting from interviews?

Many people think they come across as a tongue tied idiot and whilst they may be a little nervous most interviewers will expect and accept that (unless your going for a job as a public speaker or such).

Make sure your fixing the right problem first.... you mention your going for jobs your overqualified for - this can be the problem, its an employers market but you dont want to employ someone too over qualified otherwise they will walk as soon as a more suitable graded job comes along and recruitment is not only a pain in the !!!! but also very expensive.

I have been getting mixed feed back tbh. Bordering from we absolutely loved you and want you to come and work for us but in a different role ( that was two steps down from where I am qualified) the job however never materialised ( and the one I applied for was taken away at a later date )

To then I have had we just don't think you would fit in with the team, other ones have told me , oh you see you didn't appear as if you had researched the role do I asked " isn't it a new role all together? Yes came the reply so where could I get information about the role from I asked " oh you would've had to have asked us " came that reply , but I did I spoke to x before the interview, but what I was informed on the phone was different from what transpired in the interview ( this has happened a few times now actually... I'm told one thing so plan my answers around that ( I still garble them) and in the interview it turns out the job offered is totally different )

Sometimes I do believe the job was away before it was interviewed for, but this last one no I do believe it was my interview technique

Whilst I am over qualified I not too over qualified, they are maybe looking for a svq and I have both the svq and a h.n.c and a h.n.d for example

Sorry am on my phone an autocorrect no doubt will have been having fun

I'd be surprised if this is the case as the last thing a manager wants to do is waste their time interviewing someone when they know the role has been blocked. Normally the role blocking is done up on high and it doesnt remove the need for having that extra set of hands so stressed people dont spend time in interviews when they're bitter that no matter how good the candidate is they've been blocked from hiring.

I should've made myself clearer sorry, I mean by the job being away that they have someone in mind for it that will get the job ( unless they give a ridiculously bad interview ( like me maybe) ) but have to go through the process of interview etc

I do know that this happens, as it has happened for quite a few people I know on quite as few occasions

Put the HNC to the side, you should focus on expanding your SVQ portfolio to include lvl 4 if possible and consider DANOS qualifications (depending on sector) http://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/component/docman/doc_download/137-danos-guidance-on-competence-and-qualifications.html.

What sector are you hoping to work in?

I have applied for level 4 but I keep being told that even though I am doing the role required for a level 4 they will not put me forward for it because i not doing it officially

It's very frustrating, I had the same convo with my line manager the other day ( she appears exasperated with me asking) and was told this time that if I want to do a level 4 I will need to transfer for over a year to a different unit ( the worst unit within the organisation doing the worst shift pattern)

I have experience in most areas of social care so am really looking more for the Monday to Friday days as I need off of shift work tbh
