My Barclaycard was retained by a HSBC ATM on Easter Monday. What do banks do with retained cards like this? Do they send them back to the issueing bank or do they just bin them?

I only know what the situation was a long time ago, when I had a summer job with the then Midland Bank. Their ATM's would wipe the magnetic stripe so the card was useless, even if the staff could open the machine to get it back for you. However, in these days of Chip and PIN I am not sure if they could wipe the chip. At the time the Midland used to cut them in half and return them to the issuer. James0

Either way your going to need a new card, it's been out of your possession so the bank will treat it as a lost card0

Yeah I phoned Barclaycard on the Monday and all they said was they were going to issue me with a new card.0

The card will be cut up and put in the confidential waste. Half now and half in about 6 months time.0
