Faster Payment - is your account number shown to the recipient?

Options
Does anyone know whether your account number and sort code are shown on the recipient's bank statement when sending a faster payment?

Can't seem to find anything about this online.

Thanks.

Not on mine from Nationwide. I can't speak for every bank but I'd be quite surprised to find any that would show it.

Its possible for the bank to get this information, but its not shown on the account holders statement. They only see what you type into the "reference" field, so if you want your account number shown, you have to type it there.

I always see the name of the sender, but I don't always see the reference, e.g. at Nationwide.

Not true, Smile send your sort code and account number along with any reference you choose. It shows as part of a long number, with other digits in as well, but it is there if you know where to look. I assume Co-Op bank are the same, as they use the same systems.

Not too much of a worry anyway, limited amount of damage someone can do with just your account number. Remember it's on every cheque you've ever written as well...

Yes, I was hoping that sending a faster payment would NOT reveal the sending bank, sort code and account number, like a cheque would show!

I think the result is that the amount of banks that do are in the minority. I've used co-op bank before and not seen the sort code or account on any transfer to my other banks, so its probably just smile that did it.
  • People with business bank accounts might see more - at work we sometimes get a lot of information about the sender with some payments (not in the reference but in a form that lists senders sort code etc.)
  • The remitting information (i.e. the details of the sending account) is sent along with the rest of the faster payment information, however banks don't generally put this information on a statement, though you can certainly ask them to find out for you. Whether or not they will do it will depend on their interpretation of "Data Protection".
