Eon old debt
Hi
A friend of my had an old debt from EON for electricity aquired from running a business with living accommodation, with an ex partner in 2009/10.
The original debt was for £1700, which my friend agreed with the debt collector that she would pay half, she has actually paid more.
This was all sorted several months ago, but she is now getting chased by another debt collecting company for the remaining balance of £700. She only found this out accidentally as the letters have been sent to the business address, which she no longer runs.
Can EON do this, btw her ex partner has since declared himself bankrupt and come out the other side.

In whose name was the E-On account set up? The two individuals or the business? If a business was it a limited company?0

If your friends name is on the account with EON then yes, they can legally chase your friend for the outstanding balance. your friend is "jointly and severally" liable. In other words EON can chase any and all people that are named on the account. This is one of the reasons EON now only put one name on an account.0

The account was in both names T/A etc ......
Her main concern she agreed with the original debt collectors to pay her half, on a monthly basis which she did, they closed the account and sent it back to EON.
EON have now sent it too another Debt Collecting agency.0 -
Unfortunately I think you'll find that whatever some debt collector may have said verbally she doesn't legally have a "half" or any agreement with Eon, who still wish to be paid for what they supplied0

Hi NIKS
We've a dedicated service team for small business accounts. Best for your friend to contact them. Contact details are on the bills and our website.
They'll be able to tell your friend where the account is at. There'll also be notes on the account about what we've said/agreed with any debt collection agencies we've involved.
