Knowing which drill bit, wall plug and screw to use

Hi there,

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm a bloke who is clueless about DIY. Never really done it and, for the most basic things, I wouldn't know where to start!

I've decided to change all this and start doing some projects, starting with something really basic - putting up a large canvas picture. It came supplied with a wall fixing but I don't know what size drill bit, wall plug and screw to use to fix it to the wall.

Does anyone have any advice? Knowing what size drill bits, plugs and screws to use for a variety of basic jobs around the house may well set me on the road to stopping feeling so useless!

Thanks :)

Can you tell us what type of wall it is? Brick/plaster or plaster board (hollow sound)?

Use a 5.5 masonry drill bit with brown or red rawlplugs and no 8 screws - maybe around 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 "

Make sure you go deep enough so that the whole of the rawlplug is in the wall - use a hammer to tap it in.

Wall plugs quite often have the drill size and screw size written on them somewhere, or sometimes it is printed on the packet.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Men were not born with a screwdriver in their hands in the same way as women were not born with a whisk in theirs.

A man needs to know his limitations.

Women somehow expect that men can do diy.

    Sometimes thats dangerous,expensive and counterproductive.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The best wall plugs IMOP are Rawlplug Uno Plugs, they work in any sort of wall and are far more reliable than normal plugs. I have used them for years, since a mate said they were good.
They grip over their whole length making them much more secure and easy to use.
They also work well in plasterboard, better than any other plastic plasterboard plug I have tried. Although you would need the metal expanding plugs for heavy loads.
