A friend will be 60 soon - if she buys a Senior Citizen railcard can she use this to obtain a 30% discount each week on her commute on Northern Rail trains? She buys a weekly ticket every Monday morning.

No, because it only gives a discount off Standard and First Class fares-not off season tickets. Peak hour journeys are also prohibited in London and The South East.
All clearly outlined on their website.

If she is disabled or uses a hearing aid, the Disabled Persons Railcard is better VFM, but she still won't be able to use it to buy season tickets.Signature removed for peace of mind0

So if she just bought a daily day return ticket each day would she still get a discount each day with a Senior Citizens railcard (she would not qualify for a Disabled Persons card)?November 2010 - a Jamie Oliver book

I'd suggest she checks at her local station whether or not there are restrictions with her journey.
Or try an online booking (without actually buying) to see if a railcard for a journey at that time makes a difference.Signature removed for peace of mind0
