Nice one Aldi

Like the major supermarkets it appears that Aldi aren't above pulling the occasional "con trick" themselves.

Over the last few months they have been depleting the stocks of the 69p 1 litre Pomegranate Juice Drink cartons and they finally ran out of stocks a few weeks ago.

Surprise, surprise, when I went to my local Aldi yesterday I noticed the same product back on the shelves but now in redesigned packaging on the shelves at 89p and well away from the point of display it shared with the 69p Cranberry Juice cartons.

Over the last few weeks I've also noticed the Cranberry Juice stocks slowly depleting, so I won't be surprised if I see them disappear completely to be followed shortly afterwards by their reappearance at 89p.

I don't mind a gradual increase in prices but a hike in price of 29% is stronging it a bit and particularly irritating when this form of subterfuge is used to try and hide the price rise.

  • I just noticed that our babies nappies are now coming in packs of 48, not 52. Obviously - at the same price as they use to be.

    Thanks Tescos!

Reducing the contents and retaining the same price is a practice that's been going on for years and even the pound shops do it.

I can understand the need for retailers to cut costs to remain competitive but there are many instances where I would prefer to pay a few pence more to keep the product size/contents unchanged.

Any form of subterfuge to keep the customers happy with prices is unacceptable and I'm sure many shoppers would prefer to accept small price rises in line with the inevitable increase in costs that come with us wanting products in our shops that are sourced from around the world.

I look forward to the day when a major supermarket takes the lead in using honesty as it's main retailing feature but I doubt if that will ever happen whilst the competition stakes are so high!

is it really subterfuge to clear down old stock before moving onto new stock?

Sadly things are going up in price so items are either becoming more expensive or the amount you get is less. Its annoying but sadly thats life. If it annoys you then don't buy Pomegranate juice. Its hardly an essential!

I would argue thats what you are doing. You are paying 20p more to keep the product size/contents the same.

Why do people complain when things go up in price? Everything goes up in price, nothing ever gets cheaper- get over it.

Then why not place it back on the shelves where it was previously displayed and I'm glad you think an increase of 29% is acceptable.

Many people see Pomegranate/Cranberry juice as essential along with low salt and sugar content products and soya milk.

For them, not buying and consuming them is not an option!

Of course there are many others who see red meat, full cream milk, fags, chocolate and booze as essentials and I wouldn't be surprised if they had a moan about price increases and content reduction but as these are essential products in their life, they will bite the bullet and accept the inevitable overall increase in prices.

It's the way in which we are hoodwinked that pees me off!

29% is an irrelevant figure when the starting price is very low. If the product was say £1000 and they increased it by 29% then that would be something to complain about. A 29% increase which in real terms is only 20p is a ridiculous thing to complain about.

Pomegranate juice is not an essential purchase.

goater78. I see you are a "Serious Money Saving Fan" and you don't think that an increase of 29% is a problem.

Please consider revising your forum name to "joker78".

It would avoid you having to face prosecution under the trades descriptions act.:rotfl:

    No offence intended.:)

A percentage increase of 29% is meaningless when its only 20p. You've already said you wouldn't mind paying a few pence more which is what 20p is!

Also your joke doesn't really make any sense? How can i be prosecuted for the name goater78? If my userid was Isavemoney78 then maybe it would have worked!
