Seperation

i am married with three kids 21, 19, 17. My wife is going through turmoil at the moment as she is deciding whether she wants to stay together, no third party, long term. She suggests a trial seperation which would mean extra cost i.e two homes, bills etc for a period of time as she wants the opportunity to return. A costly excercise one i not necessary comfortable with. However if we went down this route and the kids stayed in the family home she/me may want at a later date if the kids went to sell the house and split the proceeds. Can either party insist the house is sold etc anyone any experience of this? I at the moment am saying that if she wishes to go we should split everything now she on other hand says the kids need a base and presumably its her lifeline. on the other hand when the kids have gone 6months - 2years and i in home on my home her feelings may change, or third party come on the scene, what rights/advice would I have can anyone give?
