Paying for prescriptions?

How are these charged?

I thought it was a price for whatever was on your sheet & not each item, but i could be & probably are wrong.

I picked up both mine & the wifes tonight. One item on mine - 1 charge of £7.65. There were 2 items on hers - blue & brown inhalers, so there were 2 charges of £7.65 for hers.

I questioned it but the woman said you pay per item, so i did. Just thought i'd check here.

It's always been per item (well, as far back as I can remember). If you are on a medication that is in two parts you even get charged twice! If you use a lot of medication if might be worth getting a pre-paid certificate.

You pay one charge for each drug, if you get two strengths/ forms of the same drug on one script you only pay one charge. Sometimes you pay two charges for one medication because it has two active ingredients.

Or move to Wales where it's also free!

But seriously do look into the pre-payment precription card, could save you a fortune.

If you're getting more than one repeat prescription item per month, then a PPC is worth getting as it will save you money (but can only be used for one person).
If you're happy to renew them every 3 months, get one and give a start date when your next prescription is due. As repeats are usually done for 4 weeks, you can get 4 off one certificate, with the last one coming in just before the 3 month certificate expires. Not as convenient as annual ones, but you can save more!

Asda Superstores are dispensing these at least a couple of pound cheaper per inhaler, maybe more.

You can only buy the blue "reliever" inhalers at Asda at present, the brown "preventer" inhalers are still prescription-only items.

If you are paying for your prescriptions, ask your GP to write the prescription for double the amount. You may have to make a bit of a fuss though!

The missus is Scottish. Does that count?
  • Hi OP I had a review with the asthma nurse only yesterday and she very nicely changed my repeat prescription for the blue inhaler to (2) so next time I will get (2) one one prescription.
I had just mentioned that it seemed unfair that you could get 2 for £7 at asda (there isn't one near me) and she told me there were strict rules and you can only get them every 6 months over the counter.
As above look into the idea of a PPC.
