Fibre optic broadband

Is there a way to find out what a realistic broadband speed would be for my area?

After many arguments with sky my Internet has finally got back to the speed it used to be (2meg after running for ages at 500k)). But I am sick of the poor customer aervice i have recieved and have just found out that bt infinity is now in our area.

From their site it's says the top one would give us roughly 36meg (max of 76) and the next one wiuld give roughly 2.5 - 4 (max of about 40 i think) and they aim to estimate within +-2meg.

But I'm very sceptical about this.

Any ideas of how to get a realistic idea?

Jeers, Mark

The BT Infinity estimates are likely to be fairly accurate as they will certainly have info on which cabinet you are on and how far you are from it.

First time ADSL predictions are less accurate as the routing isn't always 100% known and they'd have no real idea of the quality of a line that may run a mile or so. The few hundred meters to the cabinet where it connects to fibre can easily be swapped out to a spare pair if found wanting during the FTTC install.

Its not just about speed, its about throughput. give me throughput over speed any day. have you had a look at samknows to see what presences are available in your exchange? Admittedly most will be resellers of BT wholesale product..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Tap you postcode into the FTTC checker, if it comes back with your cabinet being available for FTTC now or soon then look at the uplift value for a predictor of what a fibre connection may give you, multiple the uplift by your current adsl speed.

I currently get adsl at between 8-12Mbps, my uplift prediction is 3 which gives a estimate range of 24-36Mbps

This is not very accurate/up to date: For my area it gives Virgin at 30.77mbs and BT at 5.89mbs. I am getting 75mbs from BT, previously around 13mbs.

I think BT are giving out somewhat lower figures than is likely to "protect" themselves :rotfl:

I was getting a max of 14-15mbs, the uplift figure was 3.23 (very exact !), post FTTC I am now getting a max of 74mbs and rarely below 60mbs.
    Well done BT !!

That's because the data is based on a speedtester which runs on a Spectrum with a wobbly rampack connected to the internet through an acoustic coupler. It shows me as sub 30Mbps yet Speedtest.net + others show me as over 60Mbps.

    Thanks for the help guys.

My speed is, let's say to keep it simple, 1.5.

Following that link it's says uplift is 16. So that should be roughly 24.

Um, not too keen on their prices but if it's going to make that much of a difference it would be worth it.

BT are quite accurate and often you will get higher than they recommend as they always lower the figures to cover themselves.

I'm on BT Infinity currently, the speed difference compared to standard broadband is well worth every penny for anyone who is data intensive!
  • My current speed ranges between 1.5mb to 2mb. I have just checked my postcode and it gives me an uplift if 87.09. However, my speed check through Sky and BT is about 27mb. I have just ordered through sky and wondered what figure is most likely.

    Thanks
