Best software for playing DVDs: Itunes?

Could someone please suggest some software (preferably free) for playing DVDs on a Windows 7 computer.
I link my computer to a good stereo system through an external soundcard, and enjoy opera on DVD (where the music is obviously very important). On my old machines I used Cyberlink Power DVD, but that was on a disk that only works on Dell machines. I tried Windows Media Player and I found the sound quality appallingly bad.
Is there some way to play a DVD using Itunes, or should I be looking for something else?
(I used an evaluation version of Nero Showtime and got excellent results, but the price is rather more than I would like to pay.)

Not if you listen to the music: sound quality is tinny. Nero really made it sound like music: I'm trying it now on VLC, which is OK but not brilliant.
Incidentally, I usually use Foobar to listen to CDs and .wav files. Itunes copes with these quite well, but I find the user interface fussy. Weird that it has video playing capability but does not seem to let you open a DVD!0 -
in vlc if you go to tools>effects and filters then you can enable the graphic equaliser which might give you some extra tweaking? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

maybe add effects (enhancements) then, eg srs in now playing mode, and check graphic equaliser settings are flat.

a media player of any sort shouldn't make it tinny unless there is some setting astray, it's just passing digital data to your soundcard, what happens after that depends on your connection/amp.
what format of dvd, 5.1 etc?!!

Just re-read your post and yes VLC is good, but you are using an external soundcard .....USB3 would possibly help if both PC and Soundcard are both, but ... at my age I couldn't tell the difference between a 78rpm disk using a knitting needle rather than a stylus:DVoyager2002 wrote: »Could someone please suggest some software (preferably free) for playing DVDs on a Windows 7 computer.

Sorry: what is USB3?
Incidentally, some 78s sound amazingly good on my (second-hand) Rega 78 turntable.0 -
USB 3 is faster than USB 2 which is faster than USB (1) sorry for being lazy but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_3.0Voyager2002 wrote: »Sorry: what is USB3?
