Could be lots of things, but the initial ones to check are the clutch dragging, ie not disengaging properly, daft question possbiyl but have the mats/carpet got caught under the clutch pedal reducing its travel?

Then after the above its a process of elimination from the gearchange linkage being stiff/worn, the selector forks in the gearbox etc.

is it worse when cold or when the engine has warmed up?

    Who has "checked the clutch"?

Grinds as in the teeth are not meshing?

Synchromesh worn, Linkage worn or out of adjustment, Clutch issues.

Reverse doesn't usually have a synchro.

Try keeping your foot on the clutch for a few seconds before selecting reverse or first. Is it better?

Or if it's grinding, try taking your foot off the clutch then putting it down again before trying again. Again, is that better?
